Richard William Holden, born 9 September 1964, is an ex- professional footballer from England. In his ten-year-long career, he played for six different clubs. After retiring from the NHL, he moved to the Isle of Man and worked in Noble’s Hospital Physiotherapy Department.
He remained in Halifax until 1988 when he was sold to Watford for PS125,000. Mick Jones, who was bound for Peterborough, had succeeded him. He was sold to Watford at PS125,000.
Following a season at City and the club’s change in management early in the 1993–94 season, new manager Brian Horton sold Holden back to Oldham for 0.5 million.
Holden finished his career with Blackpool in 1995–96, then under the managership of Sam Allardyce. He suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in February 1996 and failed to recover from it. He had been playing for ten years without knowledge that he had ruptured his posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Holden was a cricketer for Saltaire during the 1986 summer league. He received a call from Billy Ayre (Halifax Town assistant manager) asking him to participate in pre-season friendlies.

Holden worked with cheese at West Marton Dairies and was invited to train in 1985 by Burnley. He made one League appearance with the Clarets in a loss at Leyton Orient the next year. After he was unable to complete his Carnegie College degree, Brian Miller asked him to leave.
Holden was an amateur when he joined Halifax Town in August 1986. Mick Jones was the leader of the “Shaymen”. In a 3-0 loss to Burnley at Turf Moor, he made his debut. He was named club’s Player-of-the Year at the end of 1986-87. He received a weekly salary of PS125 and a professional contract.
Holden joined Oldham just as the club was about to embark on one of the most famous seasons in its history, better known as the “pinch-me season”, when the club reached the semi-final of the FA Cup and the final of the League Cup. Holden appeared in 64 of the club’s 65 games. He was ever-present in the club’s first season in the top flight for 68 years. At the beginning of the following season in 1992, which was the beginning of the new Premiership era, he transferred to Manchester City for 1.2 million pounds.
