Braun’s mother was a self taught pianist and banjoist. Braun was a drummer in high school and then he followed his brother to the trumpet. He attended the Eastman School of Music in the 1970s. While there, he joined Auracle, a jazz- fusion group. Braun was the co-producer of the second album, which was produced by Teo Macero.

He entered pop music in the 1980s. He was a Japanese singer who released an album and then became a songwriter at Lorimar (Warner Chappell). He co-wrote the hit song “Here with Me”, which was a top 20 hit for REO Speedwagon. He returned to the trumpet and worked as a studio musician, touring musician, and with Crowded House and Natalie Cole.

He has cited as influences Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Chet Baker, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and Herb Alpert, with the last one inspiring his album All It Takes including a song called “Tijuana Dance” (a play on Alpert’s band Tijuana Brass). One of his influences was Freddie Hubbard, and Braun composed a song, “Freddie Was Here” in 2008, which he recorded on his album, All it Takes, in tribute to Hubbard, who died that year.
