Richie Richardson is one of the most popular and richest Cricketer who was born on January 12, 1962 in Five Islands, Saint John Parish, Antigua and Barbuda. Sir Richard Benjamin Richardson KCN, born 12 January 1962, is an ex-West Indies cricketer and former captain of the West Indian cricket side.

Australia hosted the 1985 World Championship of Cricket to mark the founding of Victoria. The group stage saw the West Indies face Sri Lanka at Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was played on a pitch that had uneven bounce. Although the West Indies won, Ashantha de Mel’s delivery hit Richardson in his face. Larry Gomes was the only West Indian batsman to be injured during the match.

He was a flamboyant batsman and superb player of fast bowling. He was famous for his wide-brimmed maroon hat which he wore in preference to a helmet against even the fastest bowlers. Richardson captained the West Indies in 24 Tests between 1991 when he took over from Viv Richards and 1995, winning 11, losing 6, and the rest ending in draws.

Richardson also played for Yorkshire in the English County Championship in 1993 and 1994. In 2009 he was signed to Thames Ditton Cricket Club in Surrey.

He was selected by the West Indies for the 1983-84 season. Richardson was a member of a West Indies Test team, captained by Clive Lloyd. He batted in the middle order. Richardson’s first tour began in a very unfavorable manner when he lost his luggage and was left without clothes. Andy Roberts, a veteran fast bowler, felt Richardson wasn’t getting enough practice. In the nets, even bowlers were allowed to bat before Richardson and the main bowlers had finished. Roberts made every effort to bowl Richardson during the tour, to ensure he was properly prepared.

Richardson was born in Antigua’s Five Islands Village. Richardson began his career in 1982 with the Leewards Islands as an opener.

Richardson made his debut in the fourth match in the six-Test series on 24 November 1983. This was Gus Logie’s first Test. Richardson also failed to score runs in his first innings due to poor umpiring decisions. Although he had hit the ball, he was out leg before wicket by Shivlal Yadav, the off- spinner. He scored 26 runs in the second innings and the match was drawn.

Late in 1991, West Indies captain Viv Richards informed the West Indies Cricket Board of his intention to relinquish the Test captaincy and retire after the 1992 World Cup. Though Richards had publicly picked Desmond Haynes as his successor, the board chose Richardson to take over the captaincy and Richards was dropped from the team. Richardson supported the board dropping his predecessor, which led to ill-feeling towards him in Antigua, the home of both men. The West Indies never lost a series under Richards’ leadership, so there was a great deal of pressure on Richardson. Under his captaincy, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh led the bowling attack and Brian Lara emerged as a world-class batsman. In the 4 years of his captaincy, the West Indies only lost one series – versus Australia in 1995 which was the West Indies’ first series defeat since 1980.
