Wearne was promoted to the stroke seat in the Australian men’s 8 during the 1996 Olympic year. Wearne and Walker were in the stern end of the Australian eight at Atlanta 1996. They finished sixth. He held his seat until the end of the eight in 1997. They were selected eight by the Australian Institute of Sport and won the 1997 Grand Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. After racing at two World Rowing Cups, the Australian eight won a bronze medal at the 1997 World Rowing Championships. He again sailed the Australian men’s 8 in 1998, and they finished sixth at the 1998 World Rowing Championships. At the end of that campaign, Wearne was out of international competitive rowing.
Wearne was an Australian representative when he rowed in a coxless tandem at the 1994 World Rowing Championships. He was rowing alongside Robert Walker. They finished third and won a bronze medal. They remained together through 1995, and Harald Jahrling continued to coach them. They finished second behind Redgrave and Pinsent, the formidable British rowing crew, at the 1995 World Rowing Championships held in Tampere.
