Mulrooney was part of the FC Dallas team that started the 2005 season in the first place. However, Mulrooney tore an ACL on May 14, 2005 and was unable to play the rest of the season. Mulrooney returned to Dallas to be a regular player in 2006. He was also named as a commissioner’s choice to the 2006 MLS All-Star Game. The game started with the MLS All-Stars beating Chelsea 1-0.

On March 20, 2007, Mulrooney was traded to expansion MLS club Toronto FC, in exchange for a partial allocation and a 2008 SuperDraft first-round pick. On April 18, after only two games with TFC, he was sent to the Houston Dynamo for Kevin Goldthwaite and a 2008 first-round pick.

After the 2010 MLS season Houston declined Mulrooney’s contract option and he elected to participate in the 2010 MLS Re-Entry Draft. Mulrooney became a free agent in Major League Soccer when he was not selected in the Re-Entry draft.

Mulrooney’s success in MLS has not been enough to make him a regular for the US national team. Claudio Reyna and John O’Brien, Pablo Mastroeni, Chris Armas, and Claudio Reyna all play his position. Mulrooney was a substitute for South Korea on December 9, 2001 and earned his first cap. Mulrooney was a prominent member of Bruce Arena’s 2002 World Cup team in Korea/Japan. A torrential downpour severely disrupted play in a friendly match against Ireland in Dublin, just before the tournament. He has only played 14 games since then but has not been a significant part of the team’s roster.
