The movie tells the story about Anna, a young woman played by Michelle Williams in the 1950s American suburbs. Her father rejects her brother, who returns home from World War II devastated. The local mob boss Billy lures the girl into a relationship. She is driven insane after witnessing Billy kill a local nightclub owner and her brother’s death. She becomes obsessed with her mental health and seeks out transorbital surgery. The entire community goes wild when Dr. Harold Ashton comes to town. He is the most prominent practitioner of this type of lobotomy. He performs the icepick- lobotomy on veterans, alcoholics and other troubled people. Anna, inspired by the hype surrounding an instant cure for many problems, announces to Bill that one is her wish.
