These excavations help to clarify the relations between Minoan Crete (and the Mycenaean mainland). He published Philodemus’ On Poems Book 3 and 4, which contain fragments from Aristotle’s lost dialog on Poets.
In 2006, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2009 to the American Philosophical Society.

Janko received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship award in 1986. He gave the Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College in 1993 on ancient literary criticism. American Philological Association awarded him the Goodwin Award of Merit in 2001 for his translation and edition of Philodemus’ On Poems Book 1. This was reconstructed using a series of Herculaneum Papyri.
