Huxford was born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. As a youngster he joined Scunthorpe United as an apprentice, but was released without being offered a full professional contract. He played non-league football for several years, for clubs including Matlock Town, Burton Albion – whose manager met Gresley Rovers’ interest in Huxford with a demand for a transfer fee, despite suggesting the player would “have to improve a great deal” to find his way into Burton’s long-term plans – Gainsborough Trinity, and Kettering Town, for whom he played 103 games in all competitions.
Huxford made his Scottish Premier League debut at Celtic on February 15, 1998. Dunfermline lost 5-1. At the end of the season, the move was made permanent. He played quite regularly in his first season with the club. However, he suffered cruciate ligament injury in September 1999 that ended his Dunfermline career. Huxford was released at the end 1999-2000 season and signed a one year contract with Alloa Athletic. Alloa had just been promoted to the Scottish First Division. After suffering an injury during his season at Alloa, he was among the many players who were released when the club was relegated. Partick Thistle offered him a three-month contract at the beginning of the 2000-01 season. However, when the club decided that he wanted to stay full-time, he switched to Berwick Rangers to continue his education. He was a substitute but was part of the Berwick team that held Rangers to a draw in the Scottish Cup.

Huxford was granted a free transfer to Division One club Millwall after playing 33 league games as Barnet won Division Three. In his first season, he played 36 games in all competitions. This helped the club reach the playoffs. They lost to Derby County in semifinal. He also spent a month as a cover for Scott Hiley at Birmingham City during that season.
His Millwall career was short-lived. He made a three-minute substitute appearance in the following season. Then he was sent out on a month’s loan to Bradford City of Division 2. Huxford signed for Bradford City permanently for a fee in the range of PS50,000. The loan was then extended for two more months. He was a key contributor to the club’s promotion from Division One to Division One through the play-offs and helped to build up to the goals against Notts County in the play off final. He was not able to play at Bradford’s higher level and, after a spell on loan at Peterborough United in January 1997, the club released him and he signed a contract with Burnley. It was a temporary deal that lasted until the end. He was given an extension to his contract by Chris Waddle, who placed him in the starting 11, but he quickly fell out of favor and was permitted to join Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish League on loan.
While playing as a semi-professional in Scotland, Huxford earned a degree in sports science from the University of Edinburgh. In 2005, he was appointed as a Sports Science Officer for the Scottish Institute of Sport.
