Otago won both the Shell Trophy in 1987-88 and 1985-86, his most successful seasons. He scored 401 runs in 1985-86 at an average of 40.10 and a high score of 111 from 133 balls against Central Districts, when Otago won the Shell Trophy with victory by chasing 342 runs in just 70 overs. He scored 599 runs at 49.91 in 1987-88, including three centuries against Auckland, Northern Districts and Wellington to lead Otago’s batting aggregates.
