Richard Edghill is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on September 23, 1974 in England, United Kingdom. Richard Arlon Edghill, an English former professional footballer, was born 23 September 1974 in Oldham (Greater Manchester). He played as a defender between 1993 and 2008. He is a coach for soccer schools at Manchester City’s Premier League side.
His entire career was spent with Manchester City, his hometown club. He was a regular in the Premier League for many seasons and remained with the club through numerous relegations. After he left City in 2002, he joined Wigan Athletic. After spells with Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers, he moved on to Bradford City before ending his career at Macclesfield Town. He was capped by England U21 as well as England B.
Edghill joined Macclesfield Town on 13 July 2007, re-uniting with former City teammate Ian Brightwell, manager of the League Two side. He stayed until the end of the season before being released by manager Keith Alexander.
His autobiography, Once a Blue, Always a Blue, was published in 2014.
Royle bought Laurent Charvet and Richard Dunne to replace Edghill. Manchester City was going through a poor run and Edghill, along with Andy Morrison, returned to the starting lineup on January 1, 2001. Royle was not sure of his best team so the selection of personnel was sometimes erratic. He was transferred to the second team on February 8, 2001 after falling out of the picture. Manchester City were demoted and Kevin Keegan was appointed manager. Keegan used a 3-5-2 with wing backs. Shaun Wright-Phillips was preferable at Right wing back for Richard Edghill. Keegan’s purchase of Sun Jihai further limited Richard’s opportunities at club. He was released at end of 2001-02 promotion campaign.

Edghill began his career in Manchester City as a youth player, joining the scheme as a schoolboy back in 1988. In the 1993-94 season, Edghill made his first team debut in a match against Wimbledon. Edghill was capped at under-21 and B’ level by England, but his growth was hampered due to a series serious injuries. He also missed the 1996-97 season because of a knee injury. Edghill was back in the first team the following three seasons. He also played in the penalty shootout in the final, despite never scoring in his professional career. Edghill was promoted to the Premiership after taking over the captain role following an injury to Andy Morrison. Richard scored his first professional goal against Blackburn Rovers in the 1999-2000 season. Edghill, then City’s longest-serving player, had a terrible start to 2000-01 season. He scored an unfortunate own goal in a 2-1 loss against Coventry City. He was replaced at half-time. Nicky Weaver, Edghill’s teammate, criticized the treatment of Edghill by the crowd. Joe Royle had withdrawn Edghill to save him from further embarrassment. Edghill was unable to retain his captaincy and lost his first place in the team. He was then loaned to Birmingham City for one month.
Both England U21 as well as England B capped him. He was also called up to Terry Venables’ get-together England squad in March 1995, but was ultimately not capped for the senior team.
Following his release Edghill had short unsuccessful spells with Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United before joining Queens Park Rangers in August
- In the 2005 close season Edghill joined Bradford City on a free transfer. At Bradford he scored twice; against Tranmere Rovers in the league and Barnsley in the FA Cup. He was one of ten players released by Bradford in May 2007 following the club’s relegation from League One.
