Drummie started writing with Peter Cox, a longtime collaborator. He eventually signed a publishing contract with him. The two of them formed Go West in 1982. Cox was the lead singer, Drummie played guitar and sung backing vocals. They tried unsuccessfully to get a recording contract for the next several years. Finally, with the help John Glover and Gary Stevenson, the band recorded their first singles, “We Close Our Eyes” (Call Me) and “Call Me”.
Go West signed a deal to record with Chrysalis Records. “We Close Our Eyes,” a Top 5 hit on the UK Singles Chart, was released in 1985. Other singles by Go West that year were “Call Me” (1985), and “Don’t Look Down”. Go West was named the ‘Best Newcomer” at the 1986 BRIT Awards.
