Richard Comely is one of the most popular and richest Penciller who was born on October 9, 1950 in Oxford, England, United Kingdom. Richard Comely was born in Oxford in England in 1950. He moved to Canada in 1953 as a child. Comely was baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints (LDS Church), in 1971. Comely, who has been married to Evelyn since 1975, is the father of eight kids. Comely was a sign painter, crest designer, fashion and embroidery designer, an illustrator/paste up artist for a printer, and a graphic design for newspapers, magazines and advertising. Comely also illustrated greeting cards, newspaper features and children’s books. Comely also publishes a newspaper. The ComelyCrane, a portable, extensible jib arm, was designed and manufactured by Comely. He also created the best-selling art education video, “Drawing from the Pros”.

Comely established CKR productions in Calgary in 1979. Comely resumed publishing the series with issue four. Comely resumed his role as writer. Comely gave away business management, artwork and coloring to others in order to improve the storyline. Comely was appointed editor-in-chief in issue 5. Comely resigned from the production after 13 issues in 1981 to go freelance. He published Star Rider and Peace Machine in 1982. However, only two issues were available before the project was abandoned. CRK Productions released only one more issue of Captain Canuck before the company closed down due to financial problems and abandoned the series.

According to the Panama City News Herald, Comely said that he has more interest in promoting his character Captain Canuck than creating new comics. In 2012, Richard entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Fadi Hakim, CEO of Chapterhouse Comics to produce animation, merchandise, new Captain Canuck comic book series, and pursue licensing ventures under Captain Canuck Incorporated. In 2011, Minds Eye Entertainment acquired the right to Captain Canuck with intentions to adapt the series into a live-action film. In 2012, they hired Arne Olsen to write the screenplay; however, as of 2020, there have been no updates on the film adaptation.

In 1975, he began publishing Captain Canuck with Ron Leishman, his co-creator. He met Ron Leishman at an LDS Church meeting. This was the first comic book published in full-color. Comely was unfamiliar with comic books, having never collected or read them as a child. Comely and Leishman wanted to create a Canadian-themed comicbook based on Captain Canada, but they were unsuccessful in obtaining funding. Captain Canuck was the name of the character. Although the name was criticized as a joke, it was actually a positive slang term that refers to a Canadian.

He also lettered, colored, edited, and published. The Captain Canuck comic book series was created by Comely. It has been published in various forms since 1975. Minds Eye Entertainment purchased the rights to Captain Canuck in 2011 and produced a live-action adaptation. Comely signed an exclusive licensing agreement in 2012 with Chapterhouse Comics CEO Fami Hakim to create animation, merchandise and a new comic series under Captain Canuck Incorporated.

Captain Canuck “[outsold] any other comic book in Canada in 1975,” with 170,000 copies sent initially to newsstands and stores in the United States. Issues of the comic book series published letters from the Canadian prime minister as well as the Canadian governor general. Comely, a member LDS Church, used the comic book series to promote his faith. In the first issue, he informed the readers about his church membership. The Ensign, an LDS Church-affiliated magazine, published an article in the second issue. Later issues featured missionary pamphlets from Ron Leishman (who was on a mission for LDS Church at that time) and letters from Comely. Time magazine criticized the first issue as “amateurish”, with “often clumsy art and storyline”. The comic was published in two more issues between 1975 and 1975. Comely Comix closed down the business the following year. They were unable pay the publishing costs.

Comely and his production staff released Captain Canuck Reborn in 1993 which was intended to be a new series with different characters and a different origin story. However, Comely only released four issues before it and a Captain Canuck newspaper strip went out of publication in 1996 due to difficulties navigating the Canadian publishing industry. Comely served as editor of a limited Captain Canuck series called Captain Canuck: Unholy War in 2004, created by Riel and Drue Langlois. Comely released a new Captain Canuck series in summer 2006. In September 2006, Comely began instructing in comic books, storytelling, and comic strips at Mohawk College in Brantford, Ontario where he created a one-year course for comic book illustration and scripting.
