He left DC in 1990 to start Brainstorm Unlimited, Inc., a New York-based freelance graphic designer and corporate communications company. Clients included HBO, Fine Line Features and Children’s Television Workshop. King Features also commissioned him to write the Flash Gordon Sunday newspaper strip.
During 2016 he wrote and drew a twice-weekly online comic strip called “Bob! the Presidential Atheist” which dealt with politics, atheism and social issues.
Starting in 2017, he became art director for Berger Books, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics headed by his wife, Karen Berger.
Bruning created the 1990 miniseries Adam Strange, The Man of Two Worlds. This series revived the DC science-fiction character. These three volumes were illustrated in book form by Adam Kubert’s brother, Andy Kubert. The 1999 Vertigo horror anthology Flinch contains his story “Rocketman”, illustrated by brothers Andy Kubert and Adam Kubert. It was collected in book form in 2015. He was also the Eisner-nominated Best Short Story for Gangland #4. His pencilling and coloring were done by Mark Chiarello.

Richard Bruning, a Madison, Wisconsin-based designer, opened Abraxas Studios in 1979. He was an editor-in-chief and the art director of publications such as Nexus and Badger until 1984, when Capital Comics closed.
After working in San Francisco for a year, he moved to New York City to become DC Comics’ design chief in 1985. He was responsible for the design of titles such as Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns over the next five-years. He also edited the DC-produced official sequel, The Prisoner, Shattered Vige, which was produced by ITC. He was responsible for the logo and branding of DC’s Vertigo comics mature-readers imprint. He was also responsible for the packaging and development of DC’s first collection editions and graphic novels.
He returned to DC full-time in 1996 as vice president-creative director. He was promoted to senior vice-president in 2002. He helped create DC’s new company logo, known colloquially as the DC Spin, in 2005. In 2010, Bruning left DC to return to freelancing with a primary focus on cartooning.
