Rich Rowland is one of the most popular and richest Baseball Player who was born on February 25, 1964 in Cloverdale, California, United States. Richard Garnet Rowland, born February 25, 1964, is an American former professional baseball pitcher. From 1990 to 1995, he was a backup catcher in Major League Baseball for both the Detroit Tigers (and the Boston Red Sox). He was a catcher, but he also played as a pinch runner, designated hitter, first and third basemen, and pinch hitter. However, appearing in a pinch runner game does not count as a played game. Rowland was a graduate of Mendocino College, near Ukiah in California. From 1988-1997, he had a long career in minor-league baseball. He even pitched in three games.
Rowland was traded to the Boston Red Sox from the Detroit Tigers for John Flaherty at the beginning of 1994. He did not play in any minor leagues for Boston during that season. He played in 1995 for Pawtucket Red Sox’s AAA affiliate. However, Pawtucket saw him play less than Boston. He batted.258 over 34 games, and had 124 at-bats with Pawtucket. Rowland was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to play for their AAA affiliate Syracuse Chiefs in the International League 1996. His lowest minor league batting score was.226. He played in 96 games and had 288 at-bats. He was not called up to the Blue Jays team and was traded to San Francisco Giants to begin 1997. He did not play for the Giants, but instead played with the AAA Phoenix Firebirds of Pacific Coast League during 1997. He only played in 19 games for the Chiefs before he retired.
He was rewarded for his efforts by being called up to the Detroit Tigers in September 1990. He played seven games during the 1990 season. He spent most of his time in Toledo from 1991-1993 while occasionally being called up to the Tigers’ catcher position. Although his stats in the Major Leagues weren’t impressive due to his short time on the Tigers roster, his statistics with Toledo were much more impressive. He was a solid full-time catcher who hit well, even though he wasn’t called up to the Tigers. Toledo saw him play 136 games in 1992. He spent more time with the Tigers in 1993 than he did in minor league. His playing time was therefore shorter. He batted.268 that season, but hit 21 home runs in 325 plate appearances. This was a high home run ratio of 15.48. In 1993, his slugging percentage was.548. This placed him fourth in the International League.

Rowland was born in Cloverdale in California. He played in minor league baseball for nine seasons between 1988-1997. In 1994, he didn’t play in the minors. He also played in the Major Leagues while he was playing for the minor leagues. In 1988, he made his debut in the minor leagues with the Bristol Tigers (now called the Bristol Pirates), a team of the Appalachian League that was formerly owned by the Detroit Tigers. He played 56 games that season and had a.274 average in 186 at bats as catcher. He was promoted to the Tigers’ A class Fayetteville Generals in the South Atlantic League in 1989. There he had a.272 batting average and 102 hits as well as nine home runs. He also pitched two games, allowing only one run and pitching two innings. He continued his progression through the Tigers’ farm program and was promoted to the AA-class London Tigers in the Eastern League in 1990. He was a London player for the first half season. His statistics were good enough to earn him a promotion mid-season to the AAA-class Toledo Mud Hens in the International League. He batted.286 in London with 46 hits and 161 at-bats. He batted.260 in Toledo with 50 hits and 192 at-bats.
The Detroit Tigers drafted him in round 17 of their June 1988 draft. Before he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in round 17, 1988, he played on several minor league teams. He made his professional debut on September 7, 1990, at 26 years old. This was as part of the late-season expanded roster. Rowland played in the Major Leagues of the Detroit Tigers. He also occasionally played on the Toledo Mud Hens’ minor league team, and was sometimes called up to the Tigers. He played in seven games in 1990 and only had three hits in 19 at-bats, for a.158 average. In 1991, he was back with the Tigers as a backup catcher to Mickey Tettleton. He rarely missed a game. Rowland was also limited in playing time with Mark Salas and Andy Allanson, who were backup catchers. He played in four games that season and had only four at-bats. He also only accumulated one hit, one run blubbed in, and a.250 average. Rowland had a similar 1992 playing time. He only saw six games and batting fourteen times, with three hits, for a.214 average. He was signed for the league-minimum $120,000 in 1992, but he spent most of his time with Toledo minor league. Rowland played his greatest role with the Detroit Tigers in 1993. In 1993, Mickey Tettleton, the primary catcher, played more outfielder and first baseman roles, which gave Rowland and Chad Kreuter more playing opportunities. Rowland was a 21-game player, scoring 10 runs in 46 at-bats and achieving a.217 average.
On April 1, just prior to the start of the 1994 season, Rich Rowland was traded to the Boston Red Sox for catcher John Flaherty. The strike-shortened 1994 season would prove to be by far Rowland’s best season. He played in 46 games, accumulating 118 at-bats, 27 hits, nine home runs (hitting his first Major League home run this year), 20 runs batted in, and a .229 batting average. He also posted a career high .483 slugging percentage, among other career highs this season. In 1995, Rowland played again on the Red Sox, who won American League East division that year. He played in only 14 games, accumulating 29 at-bats with five hits and a low .172 batting average. He played his final Major League game on June 15, 1995. He was sent back full- time to the Pawtucket Red Sox minor league team for the duration of the season. During the off-season, Rowland was granted free agency from the Red Sox and was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays and later the San Francisco Giants— though he never played in the Major Leagues again.
