Riccardo Tossani is one of the most popular and richest Architect who was born on July 20, 1957 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. Riccardo Italo-Australian architect, Riccardo Itssani was born 20 July 1957 and is principal of Riccardo Itssani Architecture, an international design firm based in Tokyo. The firm, which is led by Tossani, integrates architecture and interior design to create a holistic approach to the Renaissance tradition of world-making.

Tossani left Italy in September 1986 to study architecture and urban design at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). He was cross-registered at MIT School of Architecture and Planning and graduated in the top of his GSD class with a Masters of Architecture (Urban Design) in 1988. He also received the “Award for Greatest Overall Achievement” in the Class of 1988 for leadership and excellence in academic studies. Tossani, upon graduating from Harvard, declined an offer to work at the Canary Wharf office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Instead, he moved to Los Angeles to join Scott Johnson and Bill Fain at Pereira Associates (later renamed Johnson Fain) to continue his interest in architecture, urban design, and the city’s avant-garde architecture. JF Tossani was the Guam office’s founding Director. He also participated as an architect and urban designer in a variety of projects, including luxury residences, resorts in South Pacific, the Superconducting Super Collider research campus in Texas, as well as city and community master plans in Sacramento, Bangkok, and other areas.

Tossani has been active in urban revitalization of rural communities in Japan with pro-bono consulting, and has co-authored a book on the government’s response and recovery after Japan’s 2011 tsunami in Tohoku. Tossani is an instrument-rated private pilot.

Tossani co-authored “Natural Disaster and Nuclear Crisis in Japan” published by Routledge in 2012, which now forms perhaps the most comprehensive analysis of Japan’s triple disaster, contributing the chapter “Thousand-year event – Towards reconstructing communities“, an examination of the post-2011 Tohoku tsunami reconstruction policies and planning. All proceeds from this book go to charities for the Tohoku disaster victims.

To pursue these themes and expand his knowledge in Urban Design, he moved to Florence (Firenze) in September 1984 to join the Arcoprogetti architecture and urban design practice. This collaborative of professors of Architecture from the University of Florence is nominally led by Paolo Sica, an architect of many notable contemporary works, including the Ponte all’Indiano Bridge over the Arno. At Arcoprogetti Tossani participated in various design projects including the new science campus for the University of Florence with prominent collaborating architects including Norman Foster, Mario Botta, Richard Meier and Cesar Pelli, as well as the urban design of city precincts in Florence scheduled to be impacted by the Strada di grande comunicazione Firenze-Pisa- Livorno, an inter-urban motorway planned to bisect the city. Tossani studied urban planning at Penn State, taught architecture students at Florence Campus and translated academic papers as well as Grazia Gobbi Sica’s book on modern architecture.

Tossani, who had just graduated from the University of Adelaide in December 1980, founded his first practice in Adelaide. He specialized in contemporary residences. His office was also open for lectures at local colleges about contemporary architecture and earth-building methods. Tossani soon teamed up with Peter Villis, an Australian architect, to create Villis+Tossani Architects. Tossani began to become interested in beauty and architecture over the years. He also became more aware of the complexity of urban design issues. This led him to travel around Asia, China, and Europe in February 1984. Tossani’s travels in China, especially, allowed him to study the intersection of ideology, politics, and metaphysics in design thinking at all levels. He also studied the Renaissance concept of an architect as a multi-talented artist with creative fluency across multiple disciplines.

Tossani, a scholarship student, studied Italian language, culture, and history at the Dante Alighieri Society. He developed a fascination for form and design and originally planned to pursue a career as an aircraft designer or pilot. Tossani decided to study architecture after he was denied the opportunity to pursue his goals in Adelaide. He graduated with honours from the University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Architecture program in April 1981. He developed a global view based on a strong emphasis on Italian culture, history, and language.

Tossani relocated to Japan and established his own practice in Tokyo in 1997 together with his interior architect partner Atsuko Itoda. After receiving several awards, including the 1998–1999 Good Design Award (Japan) for “Villa Colonna”, the practice grew rapidly to include major Japanese as well as international clients for projects in Japan, USA, Australia, Thailand, China and Italy. The office is active in the Hokkaido resort area of Niseko, having designed and master planned several hotels, resorts and private residences, as well as contributing pro-bono work such as the Hirafu Village Masterplan and the urban revitalization project Hirafu-zaka Main Street remodel.
