Notable achievements include the recordings of Edgard Varese, Paul Hindemith and Igor Stravinsky. He has previously recorded with American orchestras Shostakovich: The Dance Album, with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps for the Cleveland Orchestra.
Chailly was the conductor of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig’s first performance in 1986. This was after Herbert von Karajan had introduced Chailly. In 2001, Chailly was invited to conduct the Leipzig orchestra’s next concert. After an additional appearance, he became the 19th Kapellmeister. He was officially appointed chief conductor of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in August 2005 and general music director (GMD), of Oper Leipzig. His original Leipzig contract was to continue through 2010. His contract with the Gewandhausorchester was extended to 2015 in May 2008. He resigned concurrently as GMD of Oper Leipzig after conflict over the non-consultation hiring of staff. Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester agreed to extend Chailly’s contract for another year through 2020 in June 2013. However, in September 2015, the Gewandhausorchester announced the newly scheduled conclusion of Chailly’s tenure as Gewandhauskapellmeister in June 2016, four years ahead of the previously agreed upon contract extension, at Chailly’s request.
