Ricardo Uceda is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on July 27, 1954 in Chiclayo, Peru. Uceda was born 1954 in Chiclayo (Peru). He studied journalism at Lima’s Jaime Bausate y Mesa Institute of Journalism and economics at San Marcos National University. In 1974, he worked as a reporter for El Mundo. He then spent a few months with El Nacional, El Diario and Expreso. He was an investigative reporter for Canal 2 in 1987, before becoming deputy director of Si the next year.

One high-profile case was in 1993 when members of an unsatisfied faction of the army directed Uceda towards a mass grave that contained the bodies of nine students and one professor who were kidnapped at La Cantuta University. The crime became known as “La Cantuta Massacre” after it was committed by ten soldiers and army officers. The Peruvian Congress organized a vote to ensure Uceda’s safety after angry officials accused him of obstruction of justice. This is a crime that can result in a sentence of up to five years imprisonment. Alberto Fujimori, then-president of Peru, was later tried for complicity in the massacre and found guilty by three Peruvian judges.

In 2000, the International Press Institute selected him as one of 50 World Press Freedom Heroes of the past half-century. His book Muerte en el Pentagonito: Los cementerios secretos del Ejército Peruano was shortlisted for the Lettre Ulysses Award for the Art of Reportage in 2005, losing to Scribbling the Cat: Travels with an African Soldier by UK author Alexandra Fuller. In the same year, he won the Maria Moors Cabot prize of Columbia University, the oldest international award in the field of journalism.

In 2004, he published the book Muerte en el Pentagonito: Los cementerios secretos del Ejército Peruano, which explored individual cases in the long conflict between the Shining Path and the Peruvian Army.

Uceda received a 1993 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists for his reporting on the La Cantuta massacre and the Barrios Altos massacre.

Ricardo Uceda is one of the richest Journalist from Peru. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Ricardo Uceda 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Ricardo Uceda Perez, a Peruvian journalist, was born July 27, 1954. He is well-known for his award-winning coverage on corruption in government and military.

Uceda, during his time at Si, published reports about corruption in government officials. These included revelations of army massacres, and cooperation with drug lords. Numerous government cases were brought against him for refusing to disclose the source of his investigations. Government spokespeople also accused him of being associated with the Shining Path. However, these accusations were never proven. Si published a 1992 story in which Si implicated senior military officers in the Barrios Altos massacre. This was an incident in Barrios Altos in which an anti-communist death squad Grupo Collina killed 15 partygoers, including a child aged eight, mistaking them as Shining Path members. Uceda was then the subject of a police probe for “falsifying Information”, which was later dropped. A spokesperson for Americas Watch (an arm Human Rights Watch), condemned the investigation as part of a pattern of government repression against journalists.

In 1994, Ricardo Uceda resigned as editor-in-chief of Sí to form a special investigative team at El Comercio, then Peru’s most popular daily newspaper. As with Uceda’s Sí reporting, the Comercio team focused on cases of governmental corruption. One of the team’s most notable successes came in 1998, when they exposed the misuse of state funds intended for the survivors of El Niño-created floods and mudslides; the story resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of Civil Defense Chief General Homero Nureña.
