Richard William McIver, born August 28, 1958, is a Canadian politician, businessman, and politician from Calgary, Alberta. He has served as a member of Calgary City Council (2001-10), and as an MLA in Alberta’s Legislative Assembly since 2012. He held several cabinet posts under Premiers Alison Redford and Dave Hancock, as well as Jim Prentice. McIver was elected interim leader of Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta after the party lost the 2015 provincial election.

McIver quit cabinet in May 2014 to run for the Progressive Conservative leadership elections. This was in response to the resignation by Premier Alison Redford. He attended the March for Jesus during the leadership campaign. After media attention, he later stated that he didn’t agree with the group’s antigay beliefs. McIver came in second place with 11.7%, losing to Jim Prentice. McIver was sworn in as Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour under Prentice on September 15, 2014.

On May 11, 2015, following the party’s defeat in the 2015 provincial election the previous week and the resulting resignation of party leader Jim Prentice, McIver was chosen by caucus to be interim leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party. At the time, he did not rule out running for permanent leader at the leadership election to be held in 2017.

McIver announced on November 8, 2016, that he would not be running for the permanent leadership and will remain interim leader until the March convention.

McIver challenged MLA Art Johnston at the provincial level for the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta nomination within the Calgary-Hays constituency in December 2011. McIver beat the incumbent by 285 votes and won the election 406-121. McIver was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on April 23, 2012. He received 8,614 votes from 15,642 (55.07%), and became the second representative of Calgary-Hays since its creation. McIver was sworn into office on May 8, 2012.

McIver was first elected Ward 12 Alderman against Sue Higgins in 1998. McIver finished second, but was defeated by Higgins who received 15,000 votes. McIver had just over 3000 votes. McIver was again second among twelve candidates in the Ward 14 by-election, losing to Diane Colley–Urquhart 288 votes. McIver won the Ward 12 Alderman seat again after Sue Higgins declared she would not be running again. In March 2014, McIver participated in the March for Jesus. It was discovered that the organizer of the event had homophobic beliefs. McIver apologized for not researching the group more closely in a released statement. McIver would later passionately address the issue of acceptance at a United Conservative Party convention.
