Reza Abdoh Biography

Reza Abdoh is one of the most popular and richest Director who was born on February 23, 1963 in Tehran, Tehran Province, Iran. Abdoh was the first child of Ali Abdoh Boroujerdi, an athlete, businessman, and founder of Persepolis Football Club and Homa Molajerin. His paternal grandfather, Mohammad Abdoh Boroujerdi Boroujerdi was a chief justice and an expert in Islamic law during the Reza Shah era. Abdoh is the son of Sardar Abdoh “Sid”, and Salar Abdoh. He also has a sister, Negar. One half-sister is his father’s American wife. He is a first cousin once removed from Dara Khosrowshahi on his mother’s side.

He began directing plays in 1983. His adaptations of classics such as King Lear, King Oedipus and Medea were often performed in Los Angeles theaters.

In 1990, Abdoh directed Father Was a Peculiar Man, a multimedia performance produced by En Garde Arts featuring more than 50 performers that occurred across four blocks of New York City’s Meatpacking District. That year he also wrote and directed The Hip-Hop Waltz of Eurydice, staged at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. Abdoh called it a “gut reaction to systemic repression and erosion of freedom” in an interview with Thomas Leabhart published in Mime Journal. His work often confronted such issues as race, class and, the AIDS crisis.

Abdoh worked on several productions with the New York City and Los Angeles theater ensemble Dar a Luz, which he formed in 1991. Productions with the company included The Law of Remains (1992), Tight Right White (1993) and Quotations From a Ruined City (1994), co-written with his brother, Salar Abdoh. His later work was called “nightmarish” and used multimedia elements with downtown theater conventions to “bombard” audiences. New York Times critic Stephen Holden called Abdoh “a theatrical visionary” in his obituary.

Ali Abdoh, his four children, and their mother traveled to California in the wake of the Iranian Revolution. They settled in West Covina. Reza’s father, who planned to open a hotel there in Iran, was financially devastated. Reza started classes at the University of Southern California in the Fall. He completed one semester. Ali Abdoh, who was a Los Angeles Athletic Club squash court player, died from a heart attack in January 1980. He died shortly after Reza’s discovery that he was gay.
