Valliappan delivered a powerful speech about discrimination and rights faced by those with mental illness at the conclusion of the presentation.
In 2012, she led a campaign to release a woman imprisoned in a state mental institution for being “of unsound minds”. They were able to free the woman in just two weeks thanks to their determination and the guidance of other activists. This is the second such case in the two hundred year history of Indian psychiatry.
