To this day, I still regret not going on my mission.” The University of Utah offered him a chance to play defense; BYU offered him a chance to play offense. For his heroism in the game against Utah, Mahe was a beloved BYU fan. He had an emergency appendectomy on Monday, where his appendix were removed using a laser. He was still able to play the next game with bloody stains on his shirt. He was able to catch 5 passes for 94 yards, and a touchdown in BYU’s 24-21 win. After Luke Staley, BYU’s star runningback, was injured in a game against Mississippi State, Mahe took over, catching 189 yards and 2 touchdowns for a season record. The Cougars won 41-38. Mahe also set a new season record with 14 receptions, 181 yards, and 2 touchdowns in the game against the University of Hawaii. In Staley’s absence, Mahe also ran back and carried the ball 8 times to gain 69 yards. The Cougars lost 72-45 despite Mahe’s efforts.
