Remo Fernandes was the son of Luiza Fernandes and Bernado Fernandes, a well-known family from Panjim. He was born on 8 May 1953. Belinda Fernandes, his sister, sings Brazilian songs. Remo was raised in a Catholic home, but he says that he realized God is more than religion. Remo was seven years old when his cousin brought him “Rock Around The Clock”, which was a Bill Haley & His Comets record. His success in English was more remarkable than his Hindi-language-based, Bollywood-dominated, and sometimes even disco-based music scene of the 1980s and 1990s. There he won three awards, the Press Critics Award, the Audience Favorite Award, and the overall Second Prize. He once represented India, when it was invited, in the Tokyo Music Festival. He also took part in the MIDEM ’96 Music Festival in Hong Kong, Festival of India in the USSR, besides Festivals in Macau, Germany, Seychelles, Bulgaria and Mauritius.
He played music on the streets during the Konkani language agitation of 1986, spreading a message of peace to the violent protestors.
Remo graduated from college and traveled between 1977 and 1980 in Europe and North Africa performing in fusion rock bands. He also released an album called Rock Synergie in Paris in 1979. After returning to Goa, he immersed himself into the hippie culture. He met a group from Europe called the Amsterdam Balloon Company and started playing at their Baga concerts. They were even invited to Miramar Beach by Remo. Remo later performed in Amsterdam with Lucas Amor (the violinist in this group) and released a record called Venus and the Moon, in 1981. With Abel, Bondo and Lala, he also started his own band for fusion music called Indiana.

Luis Remo de Maria Bernardo Fernandes, an Indian singer with naturalized Portuguese citizenship was born on 8 May 1953. He is a pioneer in Indian pop music and performs Indian fusion pop/rock. He also sings film playback. His musical style is a blend of different styles and cultures that he was exposed to in Goa as a child and later in his travels around the globe. These influences include Sega and Goan musics, Sega music from Mauritius and Seychelles, African music, Latin musics (from Spain and South America), musics of former European communist countries, and musics of the dance halls of Jamaica and Soca (from Trinidad and Tobago).
Remo graduated from school and went on to get a bachelor’s in Architecture from Mumbai. He was greatly influenced by Lucio Miranda, Mario Miranda’s cousin who is also an architect and musician. He continued to be passionate about music and often sat in on classes to improve his technique. He continued to write his own songs and played with various bands. One of Bombay’s most popular bands was The Savages. In 1975, he released Ode to the Messiah on Polydor Records. Mumbai was one of few Indian cities that had a niche market for rock music at the time. Remo performed in concert venues like Shanmukhnanda hall, Rang Bhavan and all major colleges in the city. Remo added an Indian touch to his music using his sitar/guitar and learned how to play the Indian flute.
Remo recorded his maiden album Goan Crazy (in 1984) and a subsequent album Old Goan Gold (in 1985) on a four-track cassette TEAC Portastudio recorder in his home under the banner of ‘Goana Records’. In these albums he played all the instruments, sang all voices, and was the only composer of its music and lyrics. He engineered the recording and mixing and designed the album covers. He had cassettes produced in Mumbai and personally went about distributing the cassettes from shop to shop in Goa with an illustrated book of poems he wrote (called Leads), and postcards and T-shirts he designed.
