Gerhard was the director of the institute for physics and astronomy from 1997 to 2000. He also served as vice-dean and dean of faculty of science from 2008 to 2012. He chaired, between 2004 and 2012 the joint board for the master-of science program in polymer science at four universities in Berlin and Potsdam. He has been a member since 2014 of the Potsdam university senate. He has had visiting appointments at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, USA (1982, 1983), and Tongji University, Shanghai, China (1987, 1989), and at Ecole Normal Superieure, Cachan, France (1995/96, and 2014/15), and at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil (USP), in Sao Carlos (Brazil) (1999, 2005-06 and 2012), and at the Ecole Superieure de Physique et de Chimie Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, China (XJTU), in Xi’an Jiaotong University, China (XJTU), in Xi’an Jiaotong, China (2015).

From 1985 until 1994, Gerhard was scientist and project manager at the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut fuer Nachrichtentechnik (now Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications) Berlin in the department led by Gerhard Mahler. He was made university professor of sensorics at the University of Potsdam in 1994 and 1996.
