Reem Maged is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on January 1, 1974 in Cairo, Egypt. Reem Maged, Arabic: rym.mjd.fwz.lsyd [‘ri.m.’ma.gid]; born January 1974. She is an Egyptian journalist who was once the host of Egyptian ONTV’s Baladna bel Masry talkshow. Maged’s popularity has increased dramatically due to her criticism of the Egyptian revolution and her hosting of people on her show who are critical of the military Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (or SCAF), that has ruled Egypt ever since the resignation of Hosni Murbarak. Maged has been called “Egypt’s best and perhaps most vocal [female] voice in reporting the true happenings to Egypt on a daily basis.” Maged stopped hosting the show in 2013, and joined a hunger strike campaign to support political prisoners.

Maged hosted Ahmed Shafik (the former Prime Minister), who was appointed by the ousted president Hosni Murak. Also present were Alaa Al Aswany (the author of The Yacoubian Building) and Hamdy Kandeel, a veteran journalist. During the broadcast, Al Aswany was harshly critical of Shafik. Shafik tried to defend his plan to transform Tahrir Square in an Egyptian version London’s Hyde Park so that protesters could make speeches. Al Aswany retorted, accusing him “of ignoring the more than 300 protesters who died” and of wanting to hand out’sweets’ and ‘chocolate’. The Wall Street Journal reported that Shafik responded, saying that “wanting people to stay in clean places is wrong”. Aswany replied, “We should find out who killed them.” Al Aswany also accused Shafik, saying that he was a relic of the regime Egyptians tried to overthrow and that he was not fit to represent Egyptians during the post-revolution period.

Maged stopped presenting her talk show in 2013. In an interview with Al- Shorouk, she said that ONTV’s priorities were national security and unity while her priority was freedom. In September 2014, she went on a 48-hour hunger strike as part of a campaign of solidarity with political prisoners who were also on hunger-strikes.

Maged said that she does not attribute Shafik’s resignation solely to her show, stating that “I don’t think the show inspired his decision to resign, it simply sped it up. I believe there was already an idea to do just that. The show was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Maged, Hossam el Hamalawy, an Egyptian journalist and activist were interrogated in May 2011 by military authorities. This was after Maged hosted el Hamalawy on Baladna bel Masry. El-Hamalawy claimed in the broadcast that activists were tortured by military police and that the head military police should be held accountable. El-Hamalawy stated on his blog that he met initially with a military prosecutor to discuss Maged’s “accused” status. However, shortly after questioning began, the military claimed they were only there for a “coffee-and-chat,” and that el-Hamalawy was invited to give any information he may have regarding abuses in military prisoners. El-Hamalawy claimed that his accusations were based upon evidence that was documented by local Egyptian activists and international human rights organisations. The same evidence is still publicly available.
