In 2012, De Felitta directed Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story. The documentary was inspired by a previous documentary that De Felitta’s father, Frank De Felitta, made for NBC News in 1966 titled “Mississippi: A Self Portrait”. The earlier film contained a frank and shocking interview with an African-American waiter, Booker Wright, who told the cameras what it was like working in a whites-only restaurant in the south. The resulting fallout for the waiter and his family was the subject of the second documentary. “Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story” was the subject of a full one-hour episode of “Dateline NBC”.

In 2014, De Felitta directed “Rob The Mob”, which starred Michael Pitt, Nina Arianda, Andy Garcia and Ray Romano. It marked De Felitta’s second collaboration with Garcia, who had starred in and co-produced “City Island”.

De Felitta has been a jazz pianist all his life. His first CD, “Movies ‘til Dawn”, was self-produced by De Felitta in 1994. His second CD, “Movies ’til Dawn”, was a piano/vocal arrangement with Peter Bogdanovich. It was called “Monday Morning Quarterbacks”. His third CD, “Fatha Land”, was released in 2007. This album is Earl Hines’ tribute. His fourth CD, “Pre-War Charm”, featuring his jazz trio, will be released in the latter part of 2017.

De Felitta was a New York City native. His father Frank De Felitta, an Italian American, was his mother Dorothy Gilbert De Felitta, a Polish-Jewish descendant. De Felitta graduated in 1985 from Bard College and was a part of the American Film Institute’s directing class, 1990.

He was also nominated at the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991 for Best Live Action Short Film. This award was for Bronx Cheers, his AFI thesis film. He was awarded the Nicholl Fellowship for Screenwriting in 1991 for his screenplay, “Begin The Beguine”. He directed Cafe Society, starring Frank Whaley and Peter Gallagher. The film was premiered in the Director’ Fortnight section (Quinzaine des Realisateurs), 1995 Cannes Film Festival. It was also shown on Showtime Network 1996. In 1997, it was theatrically released. De Felitta directed Two Family House, an indie film that won the Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival 2000. He also received an Independent Spirit Award nomination as Best Screenplay. In a poll by the San Francisco Chronicle, the film was voted second best-reviewed film of the year (after “Almost Famous”). He directed Paul Reiser’s The Thing About My Folks in 2003, which won the Audience Award at Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Picture House released the film in 2005. De Felitta’s first documentary, ‘Tis autumn: The Search For Jackie Paris, was released in 2005 by Picture House. It won the Best Jazz Documentary award at the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee. Outsider Pictures released the film in 2007.

In 2009, De Felitta wrote and directed the independent film City Island, which received the First Place Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film opened in theaters 19 March 2010 and had a long theatrical run.
