He continued his studies at the Pontifical Irish College, Rome, and earned a Licentiate of Canon Law in 1983.
He was appointed Bishop of Kerry by Pope Francis on 2 May 2013, and was consecrated at St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney on 21 July by Dermot Clifford, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly.
After returning to Ireland, he was the first spiritual director at Summerhill College (1983-1986). He was then appointed assistant priest at Roscommon (1988-1988), member in chief of the Galway Regional Court (1995-1995), assistant priest, St. Mary’s, Sligo (1995-192002), and judicial vicar (October 2002-July 2008).

Browne, a native of Athlone attended primary school there, and then went on to Summerhill College in Sligo, where he studied from 1969 to 1974. From 1974 to 1982, he began his studies for the priesthood at St Patrick’s College Maynooth in Diocese of Elphin.
On July 4, 1982, he was ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Elphin.
In 2008 he became the pastor at Ballagh and took responsibility in the diocese for child protection and assistance to the elderly and sick clergy.
