Raymond Ranson, a British entrepreneur and former professional footballer was born 12 June 1960. His football career began with Manchester City. He also played for Birmingham City and Newcastle United. He went on to make a multimillion-pound fortune through the sale of sports-related businesses after his playing career ended in 1995.

Ranson tried to take over Southampton in October 2007 for SISU, but Ranson concluded a deal to buy Coventry City in December 2007. This was just 30 minutes before the club was due to go into administration.

Ranson’s 1995 injury ended Ranson’s playing career. He took up a position at Benfield Greig, an insurance company run by Matthew Harding. Ranson made a large investment in the company and sold his share for several million pounds in 2002. Ranson then created a venture to fund football transfers via sale and leaseback, including several deals for Leeds United chairman Peter Ridsdale.

Ranson was born in St Helens in Merseyside. His sporting career began in 1976 when he was signed by Manchester City as an apprentice. He was a right-back defender and made his senior debut against Nottingham Forest in a 0-0 draw on 23/12 1978. He was capped by England several times at under-21 level, and was part the Manchester City team that reached the 1981 FA Cup Final.

Ranson was transferred from Birmingham City in November 1984. He played 137 games in the League. He was promoted to the First Division with Birmingham in

1985. However, the club were relegated the next season. After spending nearly five years with Birmingham, he moved to Newcastle United. He made his debut for Newcastle United on 26/12/88 in a 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday. This was the club’s first of 83 League appearances. He made 17 more appearances for Manchester City in January 1993, bringing his total for the club to 233. He joined Reading at the end of the season to complete his playing career.

In recent years, Ranson has taken an interest in taking over a football club. Ranson twice headed a consortium in unsuccessful attempts to purchase Aston Villa. The first bid £30 million in April 2004, and the second takeover attempt was valued at £45 million. In April 2007, he then bid an offer of what is thought to be £90million to buy former club Manchester City. However, on 30 May 2007, he pulled out of the proposed takeover bid of Manchester City after failing to come to an agreement with the board.
