He joined the Youth Congress division of the party later. He was elected General Secretary of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) in 2005. In- charge of Bathinda District. He worked in the area over the next years and was credited with Congress winning the most seats in Malwa in the State Assembly elections of India 2007. This occurred while Congress faced a defeat in Majha and Doaba provinces in Punjab.
He unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections against Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the wife of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in 2009 general elections, from Bathinda, in a high-profile run up to the elections.
He lost 2012 Punjab Assembly elections in 2012 from Samana constituency.
Rishma Kaur (nee Dhingra), a daughter of Kuldip Sing Dhingra (Berger Paints India Limited) in 1995, was his wife. They have one son, Yadauinder (b. 2003), and two daughters, Seherinder Kaur and Inayatinder Kau (b.1996).
