James Randell Hughes, born April 3, 1953, is an ex-American football safety who played six years in the National Football League for Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted by the NFL in the fourth round of 1975 after playing college football at Oklahoma.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Hughes in the fourth round, 1975 NFL Draft. Hughes was one of twelve rookies to make the Cowboys team in 1975. This is why the nickname “Dirty Dozen”, which refers to the Cowboys 1975 draft nickname, helped them reach Super Bowl X. His skills earned him comparisons with Cowboys legend Cliff Harris right from the beginning.

In 1980 he was the likely replacement for the retired Harris at free safety, but he missed most of the year, after reinjuring his right shoulder during pre-season and it being operated on twice He was replaced in the starting lineup by Dennis Thurman.

In 1981 he was projected as a starter, but dislocated his right shoulder while playing against the Los Angeles Rams in pre-season. The injury would open the door for rookie Michael Downs to earn the free safety job and for Hughes decision to retire before the start of the regular season.

He played a crucial role in 1974’s victory over the University of Nebraska. He intercepted three passes, and had 11 tackles during a win of 28-14. This was the second consecutive Big Eight championship for the team, which led to an undefeated season as well as the National Championship. He was also named All- Big Eight, First-Team All-American, National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete and GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American as a senior. He also participated in the Senior Bowl.

He was named All-Big Eight in 1973 after he won the starting strong safety position at the University of Oklahoma.

After being part of three Big Eight Conference championships, one National Championship and finishing fourth in school history, he finished his career with 14 career interceptions. He also tied the record for most passes taken up in a single season with 12 (1974). He was elected to the All-Decade Big Eight Team in 1979 and to the All-Time Big Eight Team in 1995.

During his first four seasons, he played mostly as a nickelback and served as the backup to Harris and Charlie Waters. In 1976, he had a chance to start 2 games after Harris was injured, and in 1979, he started in place of Waters, who sat out the entire year with an injured knee. On December 8 1979, he dislocated his right shoulder playing against the Philadelphia Eagles, which became an injury that eventually would end his career.
