Veronica Crawford, born February 18, 1952 in Macon, Georgia, is an American jazz and R&B musician. Her success in Europe has been greater than her in America, where she has never made it to the Billboard Hot 100 solo. In 1979, she was a guest singer on “Street Life”, The Crusaders’ top 40 hit. Five of her Top 20 UK hits include “One Day, I’ll Fly Away”, which was her number two hit in 1980, and six UK Top 10 albums. In recognition of her popularity in Britain at the 1982 Brit Awards, she was awarded Best British Female Solo Artist despite her American citizenship. She received her first two Grammy Award nominations in the 2000s.
The solo albums “One Day, I’ll Fly Away” (1980), and “You Might Need Somebody” (1981) were soul classics. She also covered the Tony Joe White song, first popularized by Brook Benton, “Rainy Night in Georgia”. Secret Combination (1981), remained on the UK Albums Chart for 60 weeks. Her profile dropped after that, despite her return to the UK Top Ten in 1986 with “Almaz”. Crawford released “One Hello” from Windsong in June 1981. Through the 1990s, Crawford continued to record for Warner Bros but failed to achieve either major R&B hits or crossover success.
Crawford recorded a live session with Joe Sample on July 24, 2007, at Abbey Road Studios for Live from Abbey Road. The episode she shared with David Gilmour and Amos Lee was screened on the Sundance Channel in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.
The Crusaders, R&B legends, led her on the transatlantic hit “Street Life”, which was released in 1979. The soundtrack to Jackie Brown and Sharky’s Machine featured a specially remastered version. It was also used in commercials in 2000. Later, she recorded for Warner Bros. Records. Crawford was awarded the title of ‘Most Outstanding Performer at the 1980 Tokyo Music Festival. Crawford recorded the love theme (“People Alone”) as part of the 1980 film soundtrack for The Competition on MCA Records.
