Randall Kenan, an American author, was born in Brooklyn on March 12, 1963. Six weeks old, Kenan moved from Brooklyn to Duplin County in North Carolina with his grandparents. He lived in Wallace, North Carolina. Many of Kenan’s novels take place in North Carolina, his home country. Kenan’s work focuses on the experiences of black and gay people in the south. Kenan’s most acclaimed works include the collection Let the Dead Burial Their Dead, which was named a New York Times Notable Book, A Visitation Of Spirits, and The Fire This Time. Kenan has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Whiting Award. He also received the John Dos Passos Prize.

Kenan published in 1993 a young adult biography about James Baldwin, a gay African American essayist and novelist. Kenan often stated Baldwin as one of his idols. After that, he spent many years traveling across America collecting oral histories of African Americans. These stories were published in Walking on Water (1999).

Random House hired him because they “had gotten in trouble with the Equal Opportunity Commission” so they wanted to increase their number of minority employees. After working odd jobs at Random House Kenan was able secure a job as a receptionist at Alfred A. Knopf, where he could learn his craft. Kenan was at Knopf only for two months when he was promoted as assistant to the executive vice-president. He remained there for five years. From 1989 to 1992, Kenan was an assistant at Knopf. He had the chance to edit many books which allowed him to improve his storytelling skills. Kenan’s experience at Knopf was instrumental in the publication of his first novel, A Visitation of Spirits in 1992.

Kenan began his college career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall of 1981. He graduated in 1985 with degrees of English and Creative Writing. He was in his first year of college and was studying physics. However, he wasn’t enjoying his classes so he became confused about what to do. Max Steele, an editor at The Paris Review, suggested that he enroll in a writing course. Kenan also studied under Doris Betts, an author who attempted to get Kenan a job as a New York City publisher. Kenan was denied a job in New York despite Doris Betts’ efforts. Kenan only received an offer to work at Random House in New York City a few months after graduating.

In 1989, Kenan published his first novel, A Visitation Of Spirits. Although the book was praised by a few critics, it didn’t receive much attention. However, Kenan’s second novel, Let the Dead Burial Their Dead, was published in 1992. These stories were set in Tims Creek and focused on, among other things, what it was like to be poor, gay, or black in the south. It was described as a revival in classic southern literature. The book won the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Fiction, the National Book Critics Circle Award and was named a New York Times Notable Book. His first novel, also set in Tims Creek, was also rediscovered by the short story collection.

In 2007 Kenan published The Fire This Time, a book whose title was taken from James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time. It is a work of nonfiction.
