This company made heart disease medication and later sold it to Johnson & Johnson. Kirk was also the majority stockholder and chairman at Newton, Massachusetts-based pharmaceutical company Clinical Data, Inc. Forest Laboratories purchased Clinical Data for $1.2 Billion in 2011, just after Clinical Data’s drug Viibryd was approved by the FDA.

Randal J. Kirk was a Pleasanton, California native. Kirk was the son of a U.S. Air Force master Sergeant. His family moved from California and Texas to settle in Virginia. Kirk graduated from Pulaski High school in Pulaski County. Kirk was a salesman for motorcycles and cars after high school. He then enrolled at Radford University part-time to study business. In 1976, he earned a bachelor’s in Economics from Radford University. Kirk became involved with biotechnology company Intrexon in the 2000s. He was named chairman of its board in 2008 and became CEO in 2009. Kirk took Intrexon public in 2013, taking the company’s market cap to $2.5 billion with the IPO.
