Rana Liaqat Ali is one of the most popular and richest Economist who was born on February 13, 1905 in Almora, India. Sheila Irene Pant was the daughter of a Kumaoni Christian couple. Sheila Irene was born in Almora. Her nickname is “Almora Ki Beti”. Daniel Pant, her father, was a member of the United Provinces Secretariat. The Pant family is Kumaoni Brahmin, a high-caste Hindu heritage. They were a relatively new convert to Christianity in 1871. Sheila Irene Pant studied at the University of Lucknow. She received Double First Class Honours BA with distinction in Economics and BT in Religious Studies in 1927. In 1929, she received a double MSc in Economics as well as Sociology. After completing the Teachers Diploma Course at the Diocesan College in Calcutta, she began her teaching career in the Gokhale memorial School. Indraprastha College in Delhi appointed Pant as Professor of Economics after her master’s degree. Pant met Liaqat Ali Khan in Delhi, when he visited the Indraprastha college to give a lecture on Law and Justice. She converted to Islam in December 1932 and was married to Liaqat Ali Khan. Sheila Irene Pant became Begum Ra’ana Ali Khan after she married Liaqat Ali Khan. Begum Ra’ana dedicated herself to creating political consciousness in the Muslim women society of British Indian Empire after the reorganisations of the Muslim League. Ra’anna was elected to the Jinnah’s Working Committee as an executive member and also served as an economic adviser. Ra’anna continued her struggle for freedom and supported Pakistan until the creation of Pakistan for Muslims in India in 1947.

As refugees began to flood across the border in 1947, they were faced with the most miserable of conditions, including smallpox, diarrhoea, and cholera. She called on women to step forward and seek food and supplies from government offices. Despite the opposition they received from certain sections of society, such as certain newspapers, where they were subject to vicious attacks by those who did not want women to leave their “four walls”, the women came forward. She believed that women had to play a part in reforming society for it to be just.

Ra’ana is considered one of the greatest female leaders Pakistan has produced. In Pakistan, she is given the title of “Mother of Pakistan”, received in 1950. Ra’ana continues to be seen as a symbol of selfless service to the cause of humanity and uplift of women. In recognition of her lifelong struggle for women’s rights, she was awarded the United Nations Human Rights Award in 1978. Her other many awards and medals include the Jane Adam’s Medal in 1950, Woman of Achievement Medal 1950, Mother of Pakistan in 1950, Nishan-i-Imtiaz in 1959, Grand Cross of Orange Nassau in 1961 (the Netherlands), International Gimbel Award 1962, Woman of the World in 1965 chosen by the Turkish Women’s Association, Ankara, and Vavaliera di Gran Croce in 1966 (Italy).

Ra’ana was the first First Lady of Pakistan. As First Lady, she initiated reforms for woman and child development and social progress of women, and played a major role for women’s part in Pakistan’s politics. After the assassination of her husband Liaquat Ali Khan in 1951, Begum Ra’ana continued her services for the social and economic benefit of women of Pakistan till her death in 1990. One of the daunting challenges for her was to organise health services for women and children migrating from India to Pakistan.

Begum Liaquat requested that the army train women in first aid and injections during this period in Pakistan’s history. The paramilitary forces for women formed after the three- to six-month training of women. The Pakistan Army quickly established the Army Medical Corps and recruited many women nurses to serve as army nurses. Begum Liaquat personally encouraged girls to pursue a career in nursing during this time. The rifle drill was also taught to them, as well as typing, decoding ciphers and other tasks, so that they could be helpful in times of crisis such the 1947 refugee crisis.

Jinnah summoned Ra’ana in 1942 when it became clear that Imperial Japan was about to attack India. Islam does not want women to be kept in closed quarters and denied fresh air. Ra’ana organized Muslim women to do this in the same year. She also formed a small medical corps in Delhi for first aid and nursing. Begum Ra’ana was a key player in promoting political awareness among women. Ra’ana, one of the South Asian women who aspired to be a politician, encouraged hundreds more women to stand shoulder-to-shoulder for Pakistan.

In 1949, Begum Ra’ana arranged a conference of over 100 active women from all over Pakistan. The conference announced the formation of a voluntary and non- political organisation for the social, educational and cultural uplift of the women, named All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA). She was nominated as its first president and unlike Pakistan Women National Group, the APWA continued to grow as it continuously fought for women’s rights in Pakistan. For its services, the Government of Pakistan established APWA College in Lahore as part of its struggle.
