Ramize Erer Biography

Ramize Erer is one of the most popular and richest Cartoonist who was born on January 4, 1963 in Kırklareli, Kırklareli Province, Turkey. Izel Rozental, her Turkish colleague, criticised her cartoons. He said that the background did not change: “two or three people are sitting on sofas or beds, talking or chatting loudly about sex and their relationships.” She says that it is sometimes surprising, even though she has been familiar with her cartoons over twenty years. Erer claims that “all hell broke loose” when Erer published a cartoon depicting a masturbating girl. This was a first in Turkey’s press. Georges Wolinski, a French cartoonist (1934-1915) from Charlie Hebdo, said that he admires “the girls mooning around with males’ in the impertinent cartoonist who attacks the Turkish community and especially the relationship between men & women.” He said that she was a true sister and offered support to her family and friends.

She began drawing cartoons at the age of 16 for Girgir, a weekly humor magazine produced by Oguz Al, a well-known Turkish cartoonist. In 1990, she published Bir Biyiksiz (A Mustache), her first book. Her cartoon character Kotu KIZ (The Bad Girl), which she created in 1999, made her famous. She was fired from the Turkish daily Cumhuriyet after six months. They found her cartoons offensive. For more than ten year, she published cartoons together with Kotu Kidz in the Turkish daily Radikal. She also created Tupcu (The Propane Bottle Delivery Man) for Feminist Pazartesi (The Feminist Monday).

Her notable works include Bir Bıyıksız, Eşi Nadide (“Rare Spouse”), Kötü Kız, Tehlikeli İlişkiler (“Dangerous Relations”), Evlilik (“Marriage”) and Kız Hikayeleri (“Girl Stories”). Her album Kötü Kız was translated into German, and the album Evlilik into Italian. Her humor book Chica dü lüks was translated into German by Nilgün Cön und Aşkın-Hayat Doğan and published in Germany in 2008.

On the occasion of the publication of her cartoon book in Germany in 2008, the German weekly news magazine Stern wrote “she is one of the few Turkish cartoonists who are invariably critical of the role of women in their country. She breaks taboos and scourges the traditional gender roles with a strong dash of irony and cynicism, addressing adultery and bigamy, homosexuality and bisexuality, often reaching the limits of tolerance.” The Stern commented, “for millions of Turkish women, she has become a cult—because she expresses what many Turkish women think, but do not dare, publicly to stand by: for social equality and recognition.”

Ramize Erer, fourth child of five, was born in Kirklareli (Turkey) in 1963. She is the daughter of a housewife mother and a bookkeeper dad. Her childhood was spent at her grandparents’ Kirklareli home, while her teenage years were spent in Istanbul. She spent her summer holidays in Kirklareli with her siblings, and tried to replicate the landscape paintings that were on the walls of her grandparents’ house. Erer was impressed by the illustrations in Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. Erer graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 1990. Erer was a feminist reader during her childhood. It made Erer feel more confident and understood that other women had experienced similar things to hers.

In 2007, Erer moved with her 10-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter to Paris, France. She took up painting again, and was invited to take part in a group exhibition at the Kuad Gallery in Istanbul after she attracted the attention of curator Beral Madra. In 2016, she held her first solo exhibition of paintings in the Versus Art Project at the Contemporary Istanbul annual art fair.
