He plays as a defender at Villarreal’s La Liga club and for the Argentina national soccer team. Although he is primarily a centreback, he can also play as a defensive midfielder and left back.

Funes Mori joined Everton Premier League club for a fee in the region of PS9.5 million on September 1, 2015. In a 3-1 win over Chelsea, he made his debut 11 days later. In November 2015, he scored his first goal for Everton with a 3-3 draw against Bournemouth. He was a regular player at the centre back in his first season. This was due to injuries and a lack of form for John Stones and Phil Jagielka. Funes Mori was suspended for three matches after he was sent off in April 2016 for a tackle against Divock Origi during a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool. In his first season, he scored five goals in all competitions.

Funes Mori was a native of Mendoza in Argentina. In 2001, he emigrated from Argentina with his family to the United States. Miguel, his father, was a professional footballer in Argentina, where he played for clubs like Independiente Rivadavia or Club Atletico Argentino. Funes Mori, his twin brother, won the Sueno MLS talent contest in 2008.
