He plays as a defender at Villarreal’s La Liga club and for the Argentina national soccer team. Although he is primarily a centreback, he can also play as a defensive midfielder and left back.
Funes Mori joined Everton Premier League club for a fee in the region of PS9.5 million on September 1, 2015. In a 3-1 win over Chelsea, he made his debut 11 days later. In November 2015, he scored his first goal for Everton with a 3-3 draw against Bournemouth. He was a regular player at the centre back in his first season. This was due to injuries and a lack of form for John Stones and Phil Jagielka. Funes Mori was suspended for three matches after he was sent off in April 2016 for a tackle against Divock Origi during a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool. In his first season, he scored five goals in all competitions.
Funes Mori was out for the remainder of the 2016–17 season after suffering a torn meniscus while on international duty with Argentina in March 2017. Funes Mori was a native of Mendoza in Argentina. In 2001, he emigrated from Argentina with his family to the United States. Miguel, his father, was a professional footballer in Argentina, where he played for clubs like Independiente Rivadavia or Club Atletico Argentino. Funes Mori, his twin brother, won the Sueno MLS talent contest in 2008. He joined FC Dallas’ youth team but only played for a little over a year before moving back home to Argentina.
Funes Mori started his career at River Plate as a young player and rose to the senior team in 2011. Because he won six professional titles, four of which were international, he is a legend at the club. While playing for River Plate, he made his debut for Argentina’s national team.
