His parents, both Syrian exiles were forced to flee the country during the 1982 war in Lebanon. Jarrah’s family moved from Syria to London in 1986. He lived there for the next 15 years. In 2004, he was arrested in his homeland and placed under a travel ban. He eventually settled down. Jarrah began his business career as an export-import consultant at Modern Technology Co., Ltd., one of Syria’s largest distributors. He was later arrested and placed under travel ban. Jarrah’s career ended in 2011 when he fell out with Nabil Al Attar, the company’s managing director, over a dispute. Jarrah fled Syria in October 2011, after learning that he was being compromised by the Syrian intelligence services. His pseudonym Alexander Page was used to hide himself from the international media. Jarrah was a Cairo resident in the latter part of 2011. He participated in the Mohammad Mahmoud events right by Tahrir Square. 19 November 2011, Egyptian authorities charged Jarrah, under his pseudonym, of being an Israeli Agent sent by Israel to cause disruption. This was in response to a live stream video that he had recorded of peaceful demonstrators being abused by the Egyptian Central Security Forces.
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression awarded Jarrah one of the 2012 International Press Freedom Awards (IPFA). It was for his coverage on the Syrian civil war. These awards are given annually to journalists who have shown their dedication to human rights and truthful reporting and have overcome great obstacles in their work. The CJFE Gala: A Night to Honour Courageous Journalism, which is held in Toronto, Canada, will present the award.
Jarrah’s father, Nouri al-Jarrah a long time Syrian dissident due to the Ba’ath government’s dismantlement of the Communist Party in Syria, He established a literary magazine named Al-Katiba of which 15 issues have been published and has also published a number of poem collections. He is also a director of The Center for Arabic Geographical Literature-Exploration Prospects which is based in Abu Dhabi and London. The institute has published a number of works relating to Arab travel literature, most significantly Hassan Taufik al Idl travels in late 19th century Germany.
Rami Jarrah, a Syrian-British citizen, grew up in London and spent most of his childhood there. In 2004, he visited Damascus to visit his parents. He was then detained by Syrian authorities and placed under a three-year travel ban. He was interrogated numerous times by intelligence branches about his relationship to his parents between 2004 and 2007. Both of his parents were long-time Ba’ath supporters. Jarrah was captured on 25 March 2011, while he was filming a demonstration at the Umayyad Mosque. He was then tortured by a Syrian security agency for three days and released after signing a document admitting that he was a terrorist from abroad.

He was “outed by the Syrian intelligence sometime in September/October 2011, and fled to Egypt along with his wife, daughter, and continued to use the name Alexander Page.
