Clayton played wingback in 10 games for the 1978 Michigan team. They compiled a 10-2 record and tied for the Big Ten championship. Clayton also outscored his opponents 372 to 101. Clayton scored two touchdowns in a victory over Wisconsin on October 21, 1978. One was on a 27 yard run, the other on Rick Leach’s 65-yard reception. Clayton caught five passes, totaling 122 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns in a 59-14 win over Northwestern three weeks later. Clayton became Michigan’s top receiver for the second year in a row, with 25 receptions totalling 546 yards and eight touchdowns. Clayton’s eight touchdowns on the receiving end in 1978 was a Michigan school record.
Clayton was selected by the New York Jets in the second round (47th overall pick) of the 1980 NFL Draft. He sustained a stress fracture to the left fibula in August 1980 and did not appear in any regular season games during the 1980 NFL season. He returned to the Jets for pre-season training camp in 1981 but was released in late August 1981. Clayton was then signed by the St. Louis Cardinals and appeared in seven games for the Cardinals during the 1981 NFL season.
Clayton was a sophomore and started eight games as a wingback for the 1977 Michigan Wolverines football club. They compiled a 10-2 record, tied the Big Ten Conference championship title, and outscored their opponents 353 to 124. Clayton was compared to Jim Smith, a recently graduated All-American receiver from Michigan, when he caught three passes for 99 yards in the fourth game. Clayton was also the leading Michigan receiver with five catches of 84 yards, in a 27-20 defeat to Washington in 1978 Rose Bowl. Clayton, who was also Michigan’s quarterback, had 24 receptions for 477 yard and two touchdowns in 1977.

Ralph Darrell Clayton, born September 29, 1958, is an ex-professional American football player. Clayton, a native of Detroit, Michigan played college football from 1976 to 1979 as a “wingback” at the University of Michigan. He was also the top receiver for the Michigan Wolverines football teams in 1977 and 1978. Clayton was injured after being selected by New York Jets in round two of 1980 NFL Draft. Clayton signed later with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he played seven games during the 1981 NFL Season.
Clayton was enrolled at the University of Michigan from 1976 to play college football for Bo Schembechler’s Michigan Wolverines football team. Clayton, a freshman in 1976 was listed as a junior varsity player. However, he did play in six games for Bo Schembechler’s Michigan Wolverines football teams as a backup runningback. He accumulated 52 rushing yards on nine runs and 13 receiving yards on just two catches.
As a senior, Clayton started all 12 games at wingback for the 1979 Michigan team. On October 6, 1979, Clayton had a career-high 66-yard game-winning touchdown catch from B. J. Dickey in 21-7 victory over Michigan State. In his final game in a Michigan uniform, Clayton had a 50-yard reception from John Wangler in the 1979 Gator Bowl. Clayton finished the season with 16 receptions for 357 yards and one touchdown. While Clayton had led Michigan in receiving in 1977 and 1978 with Rick Leach at quarterback, he finished third in receiving for the 1979 team (behind Doug Marsh and Anthony Carter) with Dickey and Wangler at quarterback.
