Ralph Carney (January 23, 1956 – December 16, 2017) was an American singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Although his primary instruments were clarinets and saxophones, Carney also collected many other instruments and played them, sometimes obscure or unusual.

Carney died on December 17, 2017, at the age of 61, from head injuries sustained falling down steps in his home in Portland, Oregon the previous day. He was survived by his daughter, Hedda, as well as his partner, Megan Hinchliffe.
Carney was born in Akron Ohio and listened to music through a windup recorder. Carney was the youngest of his three siblings. Jim Carney is his older brother and a long-time Akron Beacon Journal reporter. After a long battle against breast cancer, Patsy Carney, his sister, passed away in 1997. William Carney was his father and worked in polyester research at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron. Ralph Carney was an early fan of art and switched to music in eighth grade. He learned the five-string banjo, guitar, violin, harmonica, and also played bluegrass, country, and other blues. Madge Carney, his father and mother, encouraged him to pursue music. He began playing the saxophone at age 15. He worked at a mall record shop.

Tin Huey worked with Carney in the 1970s, Tom Waits in the 1980s, and Jonathan Richman in the 1980s. Carney also recorded and performed with Dieselhed and Marc Ribot. Carney was a Waits alumni and released several solo albums. He also joined the Oranj Symphonette along with Matt Brubeck and Joe Gore. Carneyball Johnson in San Francisco was also his home, where he played on saxophones and Turkish clarinet. He also sang vocals.
Carney composed the music for two poetry records released by Paris Records (both are yet to be published). One was the one with Robert Creeley, called Really! He also performed music on an Ira Cohen album called the Stauffenberg Cycle. Ralph was a performer on the 1994 Kathy Acker record Redoing Childhood, Paris Records. In 2001, he performed songs on some Flash Web Premiere Toons cartoons at CartoonNetwork.com. Tin Huey, his old band, released a compilation CD with unreleased material on Smog Veil Records in 2009. David Greenberger, who released the Duplex Planet called Oh Pa in late 2011, collaborated with him. He recorded and performed gigs with Ralph Carney’s Serious Jass Project after 2009. Smog Veil Records released a new album, Seriously, in July 2011.
Carney collaborated with the Black Keys on their album Attack & Release. He occasionally joined them on stage when they toured that record. In 2014, he collaborated with his nephew Patrick for the BoJack Horseman theme song. He toured with They Might Be Giants in the fall of 2009. He recorded and performed with Black Francis in 2008 a score for the Silent film Der Golem, he guested with Yo La Tengo and Medeski Martin & Wood for live shows in 2010 and
- He recorded on a T Bone Burnett-produced project the Ghost Brothers of Darkland County with Marc Ribot and Elvis Costello, as yet unreleased. He performed on many Hal Willner-produced shows at UCLA’s Royce Hall including a Tribute to Harry Smith in 2001, with a huge number of performers including Todd Rundgren, Phillip Glass, and David Johanson.
