Ralf Reski is one of the most popular and richest Biotechnologist who was born on November 18, 1958 in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Ralf Reski, a German Professor of Plant Biotechnology who was born 18 November 1958 in Gelsenkirchen, is the former Dean of University of Freiburg’s Faculty of Biology. He is also a Senior Fellow at Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies and an affiliate of the French Ecole superieure de biotechnologie Strasbourg.

BASF, a chemical company, invested over 30 million in 1999. DM participated in a four year collaboration project with Reski to discover new genes that could make crops plants more resilient to cold, drought and pest attack. Their collaboration also focused on plants with higher nutritional value (vitamins and polyunsaturated fat acids). Reski also invented the moss-bioreactor and established “greenovation Biotech GmbH”, which is a biotechnology company that uses moss bioreactors to produce pharmaceuticals. Reski and his coworkers created recombinant, biologically activated human factor H using a moss- bioreactor in 2011. The first phase of a clinical trial was completed in 2017. It tested the enzyme Alpha-galactosidase which was made in moss for Fabry disease.

Also in 2010, Reski and colleagues discovered a new mechanism of gene regulation; the epigenetic gene silencing by microRNAs.

In 2010, Reski established the International Moss Stock Center (IMSC), which stores and freely distributes moss strains, transgenics and ecotypes. The IMSC assigns accession numbers that can be used in scientific publications to facilitate identification and availability of the respective samples.

Reski suggested the moss Physcomitrella Patens in 1998 as a model plant for biological research. Reski has made significant contributions to the worldwide adoption of mosses as a model plant for biological research. Reski and his colleagues from Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States successfully proposed the genome of Physcomitrella Patens to complete sequencing at the Joint Genome Institute JGI (a U.S. Department of Energy facility). The genome was released in December 2007, with the bioinformatic work spearheaded by Reski’s group and financed by the German National Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG). The Freiburg Chair of Plant Biotechnology currently hosts an online database of Physcomitrella Patens that includes the genome sequence, annotated gene model and supplemental information. The DOE JGI selected the genome of Physcomitrella Patens as a “flagship” plant genome in 2010 because of its scientific and economic significance.

Ralf Reski is one of the richest Biotechnologist from Germany. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Ralf Reski 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Ralf Reski studied Biology and Chemistry at the Universities in Giessen and Hamburg. In 1990, he was awarded a doctorate in Genetics by the University of Hamburg. He also received his habilitation as General Botany in 1994. He was a Heisenberg Fellow of the German Research Foundation from 1996 to 1999.

Reski and his coworkers also created a knockout moss in 1998 by deleting the ftsZ-gene. This was the first gene that is essential for the division of any organelle in an eukaryote. Ralf Reski, based on further research on the family of ftsZ genes, coined “plastoskeleton” in 2000. He presented a new concept for cell biology about how chloroplasts (the green cells organelles of plants), change shape and divide.

He was appointed Distinguished Professor and entitled Ordinarius at the University of Freiburg in 1999, where he became Head of the newly established Department of Plant Biotechnology. From 2001 until 2011, Reski was Director Plant Biotechnology at the Centre for Applied Biosciences (ZAB, University of Freiburg). Also since 2010 he is elected senator and speaker in the academic senat of the university Freiburg.
