In 2003, he founded Rebel Theater Company in New York City and was the Producing Artistic director. He was the Artistic Director at New Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia. He is the Third Vice-President of the Brooklyn Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He chairs the Equity in the Arts and Culture Committee of the NAACP Brooklyn Branch. He is a member of the Playwrights-Directors Unit at The Actor’s Studio. Michael Moore Literary & Creatives represents him.
It made its New York Off Broadway debut at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture in 2018.

Maharaj is a playwright and has written many plays. Maharaj spent thirteen year interviewing members The Little Rock Nine, nineteen African American teenagers who helped integrate Little Rock Central High School. Arkansas Repertory Theatre gave the play its first developmental premiere. It was also given a second developmental production in the New Works Festival 2011 at TheatreWorks, Palo Alto. It was then given a production at Passage Theatre, Trenton, NJ in 2014. This production won it the 2015 Barrymore Award as Outstanding Ensemble in Play.

He received grants for the Van Lier Directing Fellowship, Brooklyn Arts Council Grant, Winthrop Rockefeller Grant, Doris Duke Charitable Grant, Andrew W. Mellon Grant and Time Warner Diverse Voices Grant. Maharaj is an alumnus of Lincoln Center Directors Lab, TCG Young Leaders of Color in the American Theater, and New Orleans Writers Residency 2020.
