On June 4, 2007, thousands of people attended the funerals of the four men at Karemlash in Iraq. Ganni was the secretary to Paulos Faraj Rahho, the Archbishop in Mosul of Chaldean Church, Iraq’s largest Christian congregation. Rahho was killed in Mosul, nine months after Ganni’s murder.
Ganni was finishing up his degree in Rome at the time of the outbreak of war in Iraq. Ganni had been granted permission by his bishop to return in Rome to complete a doctorate on ecumenism. He expressed opposition to the invasion in Iraqi, fearing that Christians from Iraq would be persecuted and targeted. He hoped to return to his homeland to serve the Church and its people. After Saddam Hussein’s 2003 ouster, he did so.

Ragheed Aziz Gani (20 January 1972, Mosul; 3 June 2007 Mosul) was a Chaldean priest. He was murdered along with three other subdeacons, including his cousin Basman Itsef Daud and Wahid Hanna Isho on Trinity Sunday 2007, the Sunday after Pentecost. They were all killed in front of Mosul’s Holy Spirit Chaldean Church, where he was a parish priest.
Ganni was awarded a degree from Mosul University in Civil Engineering in 1996. He also completed the mandatory military service under Saddam Hussein’s regime. Ganni was sent by his bishop to Rome in 1996 for further study at Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas Angelicum, where he received a licentiate of ecumenicaltheology in 2003. On October 13, 2001, he was ordained priest in Rome at the Pontifical Urbaniana University.
