It can be considered a landmark in the field of evolution and eusociality since the 1964 seminal work of W. D. Hamilton. He has been an active researcher for the past three decades, contributing to the understanding of the ultimate and proximate factors that have influenced social evolution in wasps. His opinionated articles about science policy are controversial. He has argued against the Open Access model of science publishing, which allows anyone to pay for publication.

He also holds several other academic positions. He is the founder chairman of the Centre for Contemporary Studies (IISc), Bangalore. He is also an honorary professor at Jawaharlal Naehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Kolkata. He is a Non- resident Permanent fellow of Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. He is the chairman of Research Council for History of Science at Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi. In July 2012, he was elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Gadagkar was elected as a Foreign Associate of USA’s National Academy of Sciences in 2006. For his contributions to science research, he has received numerous awards including the Cross of the Order of Merit (Germany), the Shanti Bhatnagar Award for Biology in 1993 and the TWAS Prize 1999.
