He was appointed director of football at Trapani, Serie C’s club in August 2018. After disagreements with Maurizio de Simone’s new ownership, he was forced to resign.
After Trapani’s promotion from Serie B at the end of the season, and another change in ownership, Rubino was rehired on the 8th of July 2019 as the Granata’s director of football. On 20 October 2019, he was released.

Rubino began his career at Bari. Then he played for Bisceglie in Serie C2, also located within Bari. He was a part of 3 Serie C2 seasons and he followed the teams at Serie D. In 1999, he joined Brescello in Serie C1. He left for Pro Sesto in Serie C2 in January 2000. He moved to Novara in Serie C2 in the summer 2001. There he scored 16 league goals. After a successful loan period with Siena of Serie B, he was spotted by the club. After only 5 league matches, he was loaned to Torino in Serie B. Novara bought him back in June 2004, but he moved to Salernitana in Serie B in January 2005. He signed a 2-year contract with Perugia in Serie C1 after a second season with Novara.
Rubino, who had retired in 2015, was hired to be a scout by his former club S.S.C. Bari. In August 2016, he resigned from the position to join S.S.D. Palermo, the club’s new chefcout under Daniele Faggiano. Faggiano moved with him to Parma Calcio in January 2017 and he worked in a similar position.
