Rachid Niny, a Moroccan journalist, chronicler, editor and director of Al Massae was born 16 October 1970 in Ben Slimane (Morocco). Al Massae was the most read daily newspaper in Morocco as of 2012. From 28 April 2011 to 28, 2012, he was imprisoned for “undermining the judiciary’s decision”, “attempting influence the judiciary”, as well as “reporting untrue criminal offenses”. Amnesty International designated him a prisoner-of-conscience.

Niny was released on the 28th April 2012, after he had served his sentence. He spoke to journalists about press freedom in Morocco on the day of Niny’s release.

Rachid Niny, the Moroccan Police’s general prosecutor at Casablanca, was accused of “offence against national security and citizens security”, on Thursday 28 April 2011. Khalid Soufyani, his lawyer, said that the arrest was a political decision to silence an opponent to official corruption. Niny was sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Court of First Instance at Ain S’ba’, Casablanca on 9 June 2011 for “undermining an judicial decision”, “attempting o influence the judiciary” and “reporting untrued criminal offences”.

Rachid Niny, a high school graduate in modern literature, entered The University of Literature and Human Sciences Mohammedia (Morocco), to study Arabic Literature. He was unemployed when he earned his bachelor’s degree, 1994. He was refused employment by “El Alam”, an Arabic newspaper that is affiliated with The “Istiqlal Party”. This newspaper had been his student collaboration.

Amnesty International protested Niny’s incarceration, declaring him a prisoner of conscience and demanding his immediate release. On 19 January 2012, he was awarded an Oxfam Novib/PEN Award in recognition of “writers who have been persecuted for their work and continue working despite the consequences”.
