ExCite Poetry was established by her in Devon in 2009. ExCite Poetry, the Devon arm of the Poetry Society, became the largest regional branch by a substantial margin within six months. It had well over 200 members. This made it the focal point of a BBC Radio 4 program. She hosted a monthly arts-review program on Phonic FM from 2009 to 2013. The Sunday Times praised it as “providing some the most inspiring broadcasting” in the country.

Rachel McCarthy was born in Preston (Lancashire). She attended St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Leyland St Mary’s Catholic High School, and completed six A-levels at Runshaw College in Leyland. As a University College member, she studied Natural Sciences at Durham University. In 2006, she graduated with double first-class honours in Chemistry & Physics. Later, she completed a doctorate on climatology.

She joined the Met Office in 2008 and quickly became a Senior Climate Scientist. Her expertise is in Climate Impacts, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Climate Impacts. She was then seconded to London in 2010 to assist the UK Government Department of Energy and Climate Change with policy matters related to weather and climate. She returned to the Met Office in 2010 to work as the Private Secretary to Prof. Dame Julia Slingo, the Chief Scientist of the Met Office. This was the first time she held the position of Expert Scientist for Communications.

In 2015, she was chosen by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy as one of four of the most exciting new voices in British poetry that year. Her first pamphlet “Element” was published in June 2015 by Smith Doorstop under the imprint of Laureate’s Choice, taking its impetus from the naming and properties of the transition metals of the periodic table.
