Rabinder Singh is one of the most popular and richest Judge who was born on March 6, 1964 in Delhi, India. Rabinder Singh was the son of a Sikh family and was born in Delhi in 1964. Rabinder Singh was raised in a working-class area of Bristol. He attended the Bristol Grammar School. Singh was interested in law from a young age and hoped to one day become an advocate. He was awarded a double first in law at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1985. Singh was a Harkness Fellow at University of California at Berkeley for a year between 1985 and 1986, where he completed his LL.M. Singh became interested in constitutional laws, especially misuse of power and the way that law holds those in power accountable. He was partially inspired by Professor Frank Newman, a pioneer in human rights law at Berkeley, and his Berkeley studies on the United States Constitution. He attended the Inns of Court School of Law in 1988 to complete his final exams. In July 1989, he was admitted to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn.
Singh, who had returned from California in 1986 to England, became a University of Nottingham law lecturer for two years. Singh was a visiting fellow at Queen Mary University of London in the late 1990s. From 2003 to 2009, Singh was a Visiting Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws in 2004 by the London Metropolitan University. In 2007, he was appointed Special Professor of Law at the University of Nottingham. Singh gave the annual LexisNexis Butterworths Lecture about Law and Society at Queen Mary University of London (16 March 2011). The lecture entitled “The Changing Nature and Practice of the Judicial Process” examined the actual practice of judges over the past 100 years. He was elected Visiting Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford in 2016.
From 2013 to 2016 he was a Presiding Judge of the South Eastern Circuit and in 2017 he was the Administrative Court Liaison Judge for Wales and the Midlands & Western Circuits.
Singh, Booth and 5 other tenants from 4–5 Gray’s Inn Square, together with 16 barristers from other chambers, set up Matrix Chambers in 2000. With the formation of Matrix, none of the five silks signed up to Matrix at the time was estimated to earn much more than £200,000 a year, Singh however was believed to be the biggest earner of them all. One senior clerk said: “The problem they will have is that Rabinder Singh is by far their biggest earner. He will be carrying the rent which could cause a lot of internal politics.” Singh has since gone on to be named the Barrister of the Year by the Lawyer Magazine. In 2001 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2002 earning him the professional title of ‘Silk’ and being styled with the suffix QC. He is acknowledged as a Leading Silk in Administrative and Public law; Singh is described by Chambers & Partners Legal 500 2006 as being “known for his expertise in cross-disciplinary work” and as “one of the most impressive younger silks” in the area of Administrative and Public laws. Singh was the Chair of the Bar Council Equality and Diversity Committee (Race and Religion) from 2004 to 2006, also, from 2006 to 2008 Singh was the Chair of the Constitutional and Administrative Law Bar Association. In 2009 he was made a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn.
Singh is interested in Greek poetry. In an interview, Singh was asked “If you could choose any other profession than law, what would it and why?” He replied, “One thing that I would like to be” was an academic who specialised in Greek poetry. I love Greek poetry. Although I am able to read Ancient Greek, I have never had the opportunity to explore my passion. Singh is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts. Singh also wrote in The Guardian about how “Asians shouldn’t be prejudged by the way they look” after a personal experience with the London Underground during the 7 July 2005 London Bombings.

Sir Rabinder Singh, born 6 March 1964, is known as The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Singh is an English Court of Appeal judge, and President of Investigatory Powers Tribunal. He was previously a High Court judge of Queen’s Bench Division and a Queen’s Counsel barrister. He was also a founding member of Matrix Chambers, and a legal academic.
Robin Cook, then Foreign Secretary, appointed Singh as the ‘Independent Monitor of Entry Clearance’ in 2000. This position was held between November 2002 and October 2000. This position was created in 1993. It requires the review of approximately 1000 random entry clearance refusals. There is no right to appeal. The overall quality of refusal decisions must be examined, with particular attention to fairness and consistency, as well as the processes used to reach them. To ensure consistency and fairness in visa refusals, he reviews around 800,000. He also submits an annual report to Parliament of the United Kingdom recommending any necessary improvements. Singh is the second person to be appointed to the position. His predecessor was Dame Elizabeth Anson. Rabinder Singh, QC was an independent member of a three-strong panel that was commissioned following the race row on Big Brother UK 2007. Jade Goody and his housemates were accused in the Big Brother UK 2007 scandal of racism bullying Shilpa Shetty.
Singh was appointed a deputy High Court judge in 2003. Aged 39 when he was appointed, he was thought to be the youngest judge to sit in the High Court. In 2004 he became a Recorder (part-time judge) of the Crown Court. His appointment as a judge of the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court was announced on 29 July 2011. The appointment took effect on 3 October 2011, following the promotion of Mr Justice Kitchin to be a member of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales. He is the first Sikh to be made a High Court judge, and wears a turban rather than a wig while presiding. Singh was sworn in as a High Court Judge at Royal Courts of Justice on Monday 10 October 2011.
