R. Jay Soward is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on January 16, 1978 in Rialto, California, United States. Rodney Jay Soward, born January 16, 1978, is a former gridiron wide receiver. After multiple suspensions, he was drafted by Jacksonville Jaguars in round one of 2000 NFL Draft. He played just one season in the NFL. He is currently on an indefinite suspension by the NFL (since Jan 2002), but he is still a Jaguars player.
Soward was signed to a contract by the Toronto Argonauts on May 18, 2004. His primary role as an Argonaut was that of a fly route receiver, which stretched the defense and often translated into touchdowns. His touchdown to reception ratio was 10:39 as of August 19, 2006. Soward’s Argonaut tenure was limited by his inability to maintain his health for the full season. Soward won a Grey Cup Championship his first year on the team.
On December 15, 2006, Soward was released by the Argonauts. Since then he has been making a living in repairing televisions and working in a warehouse.
In 2006, when asked about the popcorn incident prior to a rematch against the Alouettes, Soward stated that he felt the criticism against him was unjust and that he would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. He told Los Angeles radio station KLAC that he got the popcorn idea from seeing Keyshawn Johnson do it after scoring a touchdown when he was playing football for West Los Angeles College. During the East Division semi-final that year, Soward caught the game-winning touchdown to help the Argonauts advance to the division finals which they went on to lose vs. the Alouettes in Montreal.
He was suspended for four games in the first quarter of 2001 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. On October 11, he was also suspended for six more games due to the second violation of the policy. He was activated on the suspended list on December 3rd 2001 but was not active for the week 12 match. He was suspended by the Jaguars for one game, December 8, for violating team rules. The team suspended him indefinitely on December 11, 2001. However, he had to be activated for the season-finale game against the Chicago Bears because league rules stipulate that a team cannot suspend a player more than four times per season. He was not available for the game. The NFL suspended him for the 2002 season for violating its substance abuse policy.

He was inactive for the team’s first game in 2000. However, he played in all 12 subsequent games. He was inactive for week 15’s game against the Arizona Cardinals because he had violated a team rule. He was able to return to play in week 16 and was then placed on the non-football sick list by the team on December 21, 2000. This ended his season.
Soward was the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first-round selection (29th overall), in 2000 NFL Draft. He didn’t take the pressure of being a top-round pick very well. He recalls that the most difficult part of his draft was dealing with the pressure. “People were very harsh on me my first year because I didn’t perform well. I wish I had gone to New Orleans in round 2. I regret being a draft pick in the first round. I felt New Orleans had a better team to match me at that moment. I believe that being with these guys would have made a huge difference in my future in the NFL. On July 14, 2000, he signed a 5-year contract for $5.5million with the team.
In 2005, Soward and the Argonauts were unable to repeat as back-to-back champions, losing the Eastern Division Championship to the Montreal Alouettes. In that game, Soward was dubiously remembered for an overzealous touchdown celebration. After scoring a touchdown, he ran into a concession stand setup behind the end zone, grabbed a bag of popcorn, and shared it with a teammate and nearby fans. Though his touchdown helped to put his team up 14-0 after the first quarter, the Argos got outscored 33-3 for the next three quarters. That led many to believe that Soward’s timing for his celebration stunt was not only premature, but a catalyst that fired up the Alouettes. “It was a very spontaneous thing and I apologize to the people of Toronto if they feel I took away our opportunity, but I was just making an atmosphere where people can enjoy the game and see something different.”
