Ellory was sent to several schools before he finally finished his education at Kingham Hill School, Oxfordshire. Ghostheart was published by CWA in 2004, and A Quiet Vendetta by 2005. His fourth novel, City of Lies (2006), was shortlisted by the CWA Steel Dagger as Best Thriller. Richard & Judy Bookclub 2008 selected A Quiet Belief in Angels as one of their titles. Since its publication, A Quiet Belief in Angels was sold in excess 1,000,000 copies. It has also been translated into twenty-three languages. In the week following its TV review, it was ranked third on the Sunday Times bestsellers list. It was shortlisted to receive the Barry Award 2008 for best British crime fiction, the 7th Prix Du Polar Europeen 2008 by the weekly French magazine Le Point and the Quebec Booksellers’ Prize 2008. It was named the Strand Magazine Thriller of the year. It won Nouvel Observateur’ s inaugural Prix du Roman Noir in 2009. Theakston won the Crime Novel of the Year 2010 in October 2008 with A Simple Act of Violence.
A Simple Act of Violence was shortlisted for the Barry Award for Best British Crime Fiction 2009 and won the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award for 2010.
In 2010, A Quiet Vendetta won the Prix Des Libraires Du Quebec Laureat. Additionally, it won the Villenueve les Avignon Literary Festival Readers’ Prize in 2010 and the St. Maur Prix Polar in 2011.
Ellory’s debut novel Candlemoth, which was published in 2003, was shortlisted by the CWA Steel Dagger as Best Thriller. In 2007, Ellory’s fourth novel, City of Lies, was shortlisted for the CWA Steel Dagger for Best Thriller.
