Dwayne Miller graduated from the University of Rochester. He immediately took a leave of absence to conduct postdoctoral research on solid state physics at the Laboratoire de Spectrometrie Physique, France. This Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire de Physique was renamed Laboratoire de Spectrometrie Physique in 2011. Hans Peter Trommsdorff, Robert Romenstain. In 1984, he returned to University of Rochester as an assistant professor of Chemistry. In 1988, he was promoted to associate professor and in 1992 to full professor of chemistry. He returned to Canada in 1995 and moved his research group to the Departments of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Toronto. He was made a University Professor in 2006 and then a Distinguished Faculty Chair in Research.
Dwayne Miller was co-founder and assumed the role of Director of the Department of Atomically Resolved Dynamics, which was established at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg (Germany) in 2004. He was also co-Director of both the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CIFAR) and the Molecular Architecture of Life (CIFAR) research program. He splits his time between Canada, Germany and Germany where he heads his research groups.

Dwayne Miller was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received his B.Sc. in 1978. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Immunology from the University of Manitoba, where Bryan R. Henry was his advisor. Under the guidance of Prof. Michael D. Fayer, he completed his Ph.D. degree in chemistry at Stanford University. His thesis was on energy transport within model systems of photosynthesis. It is Part I, Electronic excited states transport and trapping for disordered system; Part II: Laser induced ultrasonics.
Inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1999, and again in 2016 by the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also a member of The Chemical Institute of Canada and the Canadian Association of Physicists.
