R. Alan King, born May 8, 1963, is an American soldier. He is also an award- winning author. He is a former colonel in the US Army Reserve. He was presented with two Bronze Star Medals with Valor Device and the Presidential Unit Citation for his leadership of the 422 Civil Affairs Battion during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
King joined the Maryland Army National Guard in 1983 as an infantryman. In 1985, he was commissioned Infantry in Army Reserve and in 1987, he was promoted to the Regular Army as an Adjutant General Corps soldier. He was a member of the XVIII Airborne Corps, and later joined the 7th Special Forces Group in Abun. This group deployed in support for “Operation Just Cause”. King was transferred to the Army Reserve in 1991, and his branch was transferred to Civil Affairs. From 1992 to 1997, he was the Assistant Chief Of Staff for Personnel, United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command. King attended the Psychological Operations Officers Course, and he commanded the 310th PSYOP Company of Georgia. In July 2001, he assumed command of the 422d Civil Affairs Battalion. King was the senior civil-military adviser to the 3rd Infantry Division in “Operation Iraqi Freedom”. He received two Bronze Star Medals of Valor and two Bronze Star Medals of Achievement (2003-2004). The 422d Civil Affairs Brigade was credited with the capture of three people from the notorious “Deck of Cards” as well as nearly a dozen of top 200 most wanted persons, such “Baghdad Bob”, and “The Chairman of Atomic Energy.” The Presidential Unit Citation for Operation Iraqi Freedom was given to the 422d Civil Affairs Battalion while it was under his command. However, most of the unit was tactically under the control of maneuver units like the 3rd Infantry Division.
He authored the book Twice Armed: An American Soldier’s Battle for Hearts and Minds in Iraq, Zenith Press 2006, that won the 2008 William E. Colby Award for significant contributions to international relations and intelligence operations.
